Is it Fair to Blame Boards for the Financial Meltdown?
Added by Travis Thayer on 3/17/2009 8:19:04 AM

As the fingers start to point and the public searches for understanding about the ongoing financial meltdown, members of board of directors are coming under greater scrutiny.  Some are asking whether they should bear responsibility for the financial crisis.  Nell Minow, co-founder of the The Corporate Library thinks so.

In an interview with AmLaw Daily Minow says

"Of course it's fair to blame them. I would go so far as to say that if the majority of people missed predicting the problem, it was because [the CEOs] threw sand in their eyes. The whole reason why we pay them the big bucks is that they have unusual vision and leadership and understanding. And there's an upside and a downside to that. It is always the fault of the board and the CEO when there is a major catastrophe like this."

She continues,

"...there is a lot of blame to go around.  We can blame the accountants, and the regulators"
